Mike Groom

DPhil - GOALS & CRG

Mike Groom is a DPhil student at the Oxford Robotics Institute. He joined the Cognitive Robotics Group in 2023 under the supervision of Lars Kunze, and in 2024 moved to the GOALS group under Nick Hawes, continuing under joint supervision.

He previously studied General Engineering (Aeronautical) at Durham University and worked as a Robotics Engineer at Jacobs, focusing on robotic systems for inspection and nuclear decommissioning.

His research lies at the intersection of reinforcement learning and robotics, with a focus on risk-aware decision-making and distributional reinforcement learning. More recently, his work explores connections between distributional reinforcement learning and modern generative modelling, particularly flow matching, with the aim of improving uncertainty modelling and long-horizon decision-making in robotics.
