Robert Skilton

Visiting Professor of Practice

Robert Skilton works on robotics and applied AI, with a particular focus on systems designed for challenging environments. He studied Computer Science and Cybernetics at the University of Reading and completed a PhD at the University of Surrey on generative AI for visual inspection.

Robert is currently a Robotics Fellow and Head of Robotics Research and Technology at the UK Atomic Energy Authority, where he leads work on robotics and AI to support fusion energy development and contributes to programmes in nuclear decommissioning and other high-integrity applications. His interests span robot perception, control, autonomy, and the practical integration of AI into real robotic systems.

He is also a Visiting Professor of Practice at the Oxford Robotics Institute, where he contributes to teaching and research, bringing experience from the fusion energy sector to help connect academic advances with real-world robotic challenges and applications.
